The demand for health care keeps increasing due to the countrys changing demographics while at the same time the supply of registered nurses stays stable. To address such shortage, the health care industry has turned to recruiting foreign-educated nurses from overseas.

How do the experiences of these foreign-educated nurses look like? To portray the stories behind, I first review the international migration of nurses. Then I focus on the case of the United States by establishing the historical context of recruiting nurses from overseas and investigating the trends and developments since the 1960s. After that I look at Lowell, Massachusetts for my case study and obtain different interpretations of these immigrant nurses experiences.

So I figure out how to integrate these individual stories into the large historical context of such movement. From all the facts and findings, I analyze the consequences of such recruitment for individuals and countries and suggest the key to slow down such movement in the long term.
